Jesus at Prayer

Alone at night in the mountain air
Jesus sang a quiet song,
words of love, expressing care
as gentle breezes tossed His hair.
Now and then He shed a tear
as burdens surfaced in His prayer.
At other times He laughed with joy
recalling days He was a boy.
The night grew cold, Christ felt old.
He longed for the warmth of friends.
But no one was near to ease His fear
of the day He'd be deserted and sold.
He looked as His Father with misty eyes
to confirm once again the plan.
Came the Father's reply in moans and sighs:
"My son, this for the benefit of man"
Jesus wept, then lay and slept.
Later He awoke refreshed.
The wind was gone, dew on the ground,
on the mountain not a sound.
Once again He knelt in prayer
to give praise, His thoughts to share.
He remembered Peter, that childlike man
to who someday He'd give command.
Joy came to His heart as He recalled
when Simon fished all day in vain,
then broke his nets with an abundant catch
and called for help until other boats came.
On through the night the Christ-man prayed
till moonlit shadows fell away.
Then Jesus rose, no longer to stay
and bid goodbye to His Father till another day.
Streaks of sunlight brushed His face
as he started down the crooked path,
prepared to complete His Father's work,
glad to see friends on the trail in race.
