The Inner Wall

How strong it is, that inner wall
built of concrete much too thick
encircled by an iron fence
protected by a chasmed pit.

Butterflies are free but they
lie dead behind that inner wall.
For lack of space to dance and fly
and lack of air to breathe they fall.

Who will dare to fill the pit.
Which can smash the concrete rock.
Who can saw away the fence.
Who dares open the inner lock?

I Can't!  I know for it's been tried
many times before.  All to fast
the walls rebuild
much stronger than the last!

From outside that mighty fort
all looks calm and right,
but deep inside a heart beats strong
yearning for some light.

Life subsists between the heaps
of hapless butterflies.
someday soon I hope and pray
that life will flutter toward the skies.
