I wrote Chaos in 1977, likening certain risk taking to a caterpillar about to spin a cocoon. Once the decision is made there is a time delay, only after which can the results of the the risk taking be evaluated. It is the decision to take the risk and the time delay after doing so that can be scary.

Chaos
Said
the butterfly
to his friend the
the butterfly
to his friend the
caterpillar in a tree:
"Look at me and see what
you could be if you let go.
Declare an end. Be free. Die!!"
Declare an end. Be free. Die!!"
:O(|)(|)(|)(|)(|)(|)(|)
"But said he, I am afraid of the time
of chaos between now and then after
I build my cocoon and have
to wonder whether I
should have forged
ahead or stayed
behind."
